Data loss: Boxcryptor classic files no longer readable
Integration Affected
Boxcryptor classic 1.7.1
Device
irrelevant
Operating System/Browser (if using the web)
Windows 11
Dropbox App Version (if using the app)
237.4.5655
Question or Issue Dropbox decided to update to windows files recently. This Update without warning did a) block my PC for at least a day b) ended up corrupting my encrypted files which I no longer can read. Please advise how to restore my files. This is likely the same issue as here, Dropbox's latest update leads to no access to Boxcryptor files. Can't copy or open them. | The Dropbox Community but the solution described there is to rely on old undynched folders which I do not have. Also, the topic is closed and does not let me continue.
Text files end up with error message "cannot open .."
Pdf will lead to "No file Permission ..."
Excel:
etc..

Hi karliwalti, thanks for messaging the Community.
Have you encrypted all files on your Dropbox account, or only for certain files?
Does this occur for both encrypted and unencrypted files?
This will help me to assist further!

This occurs only for the encrypted files.
Only a subset of folders were encrypted.

Are you able to preview them normally on the Dropbox website karliwalti?

Of course not, they are encrypted.

I am having similar issues. I am using Boxcryptor classic 1.5.4.
The BoxCryptor folder can be encrypted, so i can see the files, but when I tried to open any of these files, it shows "permission denied" , or "a device attached to the system is not functioning"

I am also having this issue - I noticed Dropbox was syncing a LOT of files a few days ago (+25k). Now files encrypted with Box Cryptor classic (1.7) are no longer viewable. This is causing me major problems.

Hey all thanks for reporting this!
Other than karliwalti, who already shared this with us, would you mind clarifying which app version you currently have installed, along with the app's syncing status? You can find both by hovering your mouse over the little Dropbox icon in your taskbar next to your WiFi.
If you try to access your BoxCryptor folder, do you see any Dropbox icons next to the files, and if so what kind of icon? One last thing I need to ask is if you're using the new Dropbox for Windows update. If so, then can you try opting out of the update using the steps mentioned here?
Let me know of any updates, and we'll go from there.

Hi Megan,
Dropbox 237.4.5655
Up to date
If I go directly to Dropbox\Boxcryptor.bc I see I see a Status column with a green tick / circle icon on some files I would like to see. The file opens but it's obviously encrypted so I see junk.
If I map the folder in BoxCrypter Classic 1.7 (e.g. Z:\), I see the same files, no Status column, no icons (I can add a Status columns to the folder view but there are no icons).
I don't see a "Log out" option in the app (I do see Quit)
Kind regards,

Ok, so I Signed Out and Signed back in, and opted out ... syncing 300k files now...
Some encrypted files have already downloaded and I can map BoxCryptor to read them - phew - Walter27 days ago
