Wrap Text for Filenames So They Are Readable

Wrap Text for Filenames So They Are Readable

Please, please, please make the text of our file names wrap instead of cutting out the middle so that we can read them without changing our phone to landscape mode. Please… It’s really annoying to only see about 10 characters in the first part of the title. It makes the your app too hard to use. Please change this. Usability is everything when it comes to apps and this has always made your app frustating to workflow.

Inside of the Dropbox mobile app (on Android v.12) the file names on list view and thumbnail view are truncated.
I mainly access Dropbox from my mobile devices and I like to name my files very useful and descriptive names. However, when the names are cut off this prevents me from browsing my files entirely and makes my names entirely useless. The sole purpose is to browse my files and truncation is ruining this for me, to be honest.
Since Dropbox is a file storage software, critical information like file names should never be truncated. Instead, they should wrap to the next line to allow for complete reading and fast browsing at a glance. I like to sort my files based on their name and often, important distinctions are at the middle or at the end of the name. Clicking into every file to check the file name is tedious and ruins the experience entirely and doesn't allow me to easily manage my information on the go at all. Besides possible detriments to the user experience, the latest version of wcag says that truncation is not accessible at all, and should be avoided.
Please refer to the guidelines here: https://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG21/Understanding/resize-text.html
Otherwise, I enjoy the updates to the software so far. And I enjoy the document scanner a lot.

Yes yes yes 1000% yes! This bugs the hell out of me with a lot of apps. Wrap the text! It's not a difficult thing to do and would make life so much easier. Please Dropbox, it's a 5 minute fix.

We read everywhere that it’s “mobile first” “mobile responsive” but I’ve noticed a lot of apps lately are not user friendly, they’re frustrating and companies that have huge profits do not care if their apps, websites, file storage are actually responsive. Just yesterday I was researching email autoresponders on my iPhone 12 Pro Max which has a larger screen than most smartphones and 3 of the companies I had to constantly change the phone’s orientation, I decreased the font size to 75% thinking that would help but no so I looked up their 2021 4th quarter financial statements. Two of the companies with the worst mobile responsive behavior had over 10 million dollars of free cash. I haven’t looked up Dropbox’s financial reports but I’m sure if I did they would also have huge profits bc it appears that greed takes over, customer service goes out the window and rules don’t matter. So wrap the text for the file names. It’s so sad when mobsters have more morals than big companies.

Full support on this idea, especially since we often use long descriptive filenames with the version number and meta-data at the end. Not limited to dropbox, even desktop apps have this affliction (ahem-MS Office-ahem).

@Megan

Thanks for considering this. I do hope it gets support.

Ideally please include a toggle in the settings to switch between wrapping and clipping titles but if I had to choose just one, I'd choose wrapping! Also make wrapping the default please!

I agree, just last weekend I found myself renaming some files so I could find them easier. I really don’t like the way titles are cut out in the mid…dle.

Yes please. An easily accessible toggle at the top of the screen or in the "..." menu perhaps? This would make it possible to view all the files in the current space-efficient manner, until you need to see a longer name.. Quickly toggle filename wrapping on, easily read your filename, and then switch back for quicker skimming. What a perfect feature that would be!! I would use the app more as a result.

This would solve our problem as well.  We have multiple folders with same name but in different location so when we are searching on mobile, you can't tell which folder is the one you want without opening it.  an option to see the full path would certainly make this more user friendly.
