Synced files won't open, as they have a small brown box next to them.

Hello, i have an issue that has developed on one of my Dropbox-synced computers.

this issue only affects one of three computers i have synced to my Dropbox account.

the files as seen on my local HD won't open and can't be either edited, overwritten, moved or deleted (locally).

there's a small file-cabinet icon overlaying each of the affected files.

i've tried un-synching, moving, deleting, etc., the files and then re-synching to no affect...

Hey boonwd, thanks for letting us know about this.

Would you mind sending over a screenshot, so we can check out the "small file cabinet" icon you mentioned?

Also, is it possible that the files in question are currently in "online-only" state?

If you right-click on them and choose to make them available offline, does it help?

    Keep me posted.

    Hi,

    couple things.

when i right-click a file while inside file explorer, i don't get the "on-line or offline" option.

a sample of the "file cabinet" image is attached.

Hey boonwd, sorry to jump in here.

Interestingly enough, this doesn't seem to be a Dropbox related icon. Do you use any other, third-party apps such as OneDrive?

Also, what is Dropbox's syncing status while we speak?

    Dropbox says "up to date".

i do use One Drive. at least it's on my computer.

i'm going to look into the OneDrive settings...

Hi boonwd, could you try disabling or quitting OneDrive temporarily to see if this shows the correct sync icons?

    hello,

i tried disconnecting from OneDrive but nothing changed.

i wonder if i completely remove all traces of Dropbox from my computer and start over might that help?

like i mentioned earlier, i have two other win11 PCs in the same room with no issues at all.

and my current issue with this PC only began relatively recently, perhaps when i was bring up one of the other new machines.

Hi boonwd, one more thing, please.

Can you send me a full screenshot of what you see when you right click on a file or folder, inside Dropbox?

bit tricky capturing the right click. the middle screen is the Dropbox folder/file right-clicked.

Hey boonwd, I hope you don’t mind me jumping in here.

I was able to do a bit research about this too, and I could find this thread on Microsoft's website.

If this link doesn't help either, I’d suggest getting in touch with their support, so that they can take a look for you, as this icon doesn’t seem to be generated by Dropbox.

This way, we’ll be able to isolate the issue further.

Not sure if anyone figured this out yet, but it is a Microsoft OneDrive sync issue. On your PC, if you disable or turn off sync, OneDrive cuts off your photos offline. In order to access these cloud photos, you must re sign-in to OneDrive. This is their way of prioritizing OneDrive in your computer. Turning on the OneDrive sync will change alm the file cabinet icon back to clouds and allow access to all photos.
