Can't open xlsx files on my mobile device

Can't open xlsx files on my mobile device

DonGlover
Explorer | Level 4

Recently (maybe the last month to month and a half) I have been unable to open Excel files on my Mobile device.
Android S21 Plus
Prior to that I could open and edit them just fine.

When I try to open an xlxs file, I get the message:
File type not supported
Couldn't download file. Please try open in another app.

Any ideas what has changed?

Hey @DonGlover, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Can you please clarify if you're having an issue when previewing the files on the Dropbox mobile app or when opening and editing them through the Excel app on your phone?

Does this only affect .xlsx files or other file types too?

If you can also send me a screenshot of the error message, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response. It turns out this change only affects encrypted xlxs files.

Hey @DonGlover, sorry to jump in, but when you say encrypted, do you mean the files are password protected?

Are you able to open them normally after downloading or exporting them to your device?

Yes password protected. And yes, if I export to my device I can open them just fine. This was not necessary before.

Thanks for the clarifications @DonGlover

Can you also let us know the exact OS version of your device and the version of the Dropbox mobile app installed there as well?

Hey Don!

Thanks for the additional info.

If you tap on the 3 dots showing on the top right corner of your screen, and scroll down a bit, are you able to see an “Open with” option?

Does that help?

I do not have the open with option.

Thanks for checking, Don.

If you go back to the files list and tap the vertical ellipsis (three dots) button, do you see an "open with" option there?

If you don't see one there either, please do send us a screenshot of the options you see after tapping the three dots both from within the file and from the file list.
