My Business account is eligible for File Provider on my Mac, but my Basic account isn't.

Device
2019 16" MBP
Operating System/Browser (if using the web)
MacOS 15.5
Dropbox App Version (if using the app)
229.3.5074

Question or Issue
I have 2 Dropbox accounts and I've had them for a decade or so:  Dropbox Basic (free) and Dropbox for Business.

Checking the MacOS App, I see my business account is available for File Provider API when I choose to enable it in the Admin console but my basic account just shows that it's ineligible.

Is the File Provider API available or will be available for the Dropbox Basic accounts?

I have both Mac and Windows computers running the Dropbox app, does enabling the File Provider API cause any issues on the Windows computers?

    Thanks for this info, cafnetmatt.

Since you asked in your original post if enabling the File Provider API causes any issues on the Windows machine, is it safe to assume that you haven't proceeded with the update?

Also, is your Dropbox team account linked to the Dropbox Basic one?

If the answer is yes for both instances, I wanted to mention that it shouldn't be possible to proceed with the update on the eligible device as per this article.

With the above in mind, it might be worth disconnecting the two accounts to see if you are going to receive the update prompt on the free account.

Let me know if you'd like to proceed.

I just checked the desktop app and it has already upgraded itself to 229.4.5197.

Checked the sync settings and they're the same:  Business says I can enable in the Admin console and the Personal account says it's just not available.

Hey cafnetmatt - thanks for the clarifications there.

Could you try the latest stable version of the Dropbox desktop app from this page and let us know if you get the same results?

Just make sure to toggle off the 'early releases' from your account settings first.

I have both my business and basic accounts setup on this MBP.

Dropbox folders are installed on local drive at the default location:

    • /Users/<username>/<Business Account Dropbox Name>
    • /Users/<username>/Dropbox (Personal)

Hey cafnetmatt, let's see what we can find together about this.

To begin with: is the macOS 15.5 device the one you use with your Basic account?

Is your Dropbox folder located on your internal or an external drive? Also, approximately how many files are you syncing on your computer when using your Basic account?

As for the File Provider transition between your Mac and Windows device, it shouldn't cause an issue. The syncing process and migration should be seamless. However, if you notice anything we're always here to help.

Let us know more and we'll take it from there.
