Why does Dropbox for MacBook keep 'removing' itself?
Hi,
Myself and multiple users in my organisation have an issue where the Dropbox installed App on our MacBooks 'removes itself.
By this, I mean, Dropbox will still be installed, we can navigate VIA finder, however we are suddenly unable to open the files. When we navigate to Dropbox on the menubar, the icon has been removed, but the space for it is still there, when clicking it, it pulls up the Dropbox pop up as normal.
When we go to share files we are presented with the options that can be seen below.
What we have to do is redownload the Dropbox installer and reinstall Dropbox. When the install is done, we dont need to do anything else, no resyncing files etc. It picks up where it left off.. Really weird.
This is happening for people on different versions of MacBooks, different versions of Dropbox etc.
Any advise?
One of the solutions which helped me was, on the offline installer, when its window pops up for you to double click to install, instead of doing the double click, drag and drop the Dropbox Icon into your Apple applications folder instead.
No idea why, but this worked for some of our users.

Can you try an advanced reinstall next, if it’s not something you’ve already tried, marksow?

Hi - thanks for the suggestion. I have tried this twice already and it took a good while each time as my Dropbox reverted from using the File Provider approach so I had to set that up again. Hours of resyncing and then still the same issue with removing itself.

Hey marksow, let me jump in here!
One last thing I'd like to know is the version of the app you're using on your end. Just for us to make sure you're not using the beta version.
You can locate the version by hovering your mouse over the little Dropbox icon on your menu bar, next to your WiFi.
Lastly, when this happens do you usually reinstall the app, or does it work if you simply access your apps, and try to open it from there?

Hi - the version is 224.4.4811
I usually reinstall the app via a download from the website. If I try to open it from the applications folder, there is a blank icon and when I click on it, it says that Dropbox isn't there so can't open. I haven't tried from launchpad.

HI marksow, could you attach a screenshot showing the Applications folder with the Dropbox icon in it, and another screenshot showing the message that 'Dropbox isn't there', which you mentioned?

Hi - of course. I have reinstalled Dropbox since the last 'removal' earlier this week so will return with screenshots the next time it happens.

Hi marksow,
I just wanted to check in and see if you had any update on this issue? Have you had a chance to read Nancy's last comment?

I'm still working with support on this and it's looking more and more like an issue with SentinelOne, our EDR software. I asked our MSP if it could be causing the issue a while back and they said they saw nothing in the logs to show that but I'm not convinced. Anyone else on this discussion using SentinelOne?
