Error "0x80004002" when updating Dropbox on Windows

Error "0x80004002" when updating Dropbox on Windows

Hi Ross S.,

I also have problems with updating Dropbox to higher versions. In my case I get the error code 0x80004002. I have a notebook with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Do you think that your way will fix this problem too ? For the moment I start download the Dropbox Offline-Installer. Than I start Windows in Safe Mode. Than I run Dropbox Offline-Installer and it starts and the Installation is running. For the moment the only way.

With best regards from Germany

Sorry to hear this persists @Section8 (I understand you don't get this error on Safe Mode - which usually means that there's something wrong with your computer's configuration).

Having said that and as I'd like to help as much as I can with this, here's what I was able to find about this Windows specific error:

The 0x80004002 error may be caused by Windows system files' damage. The corrupted system files' entries can be a real threat to the well being of your computer.

Many events can result in system files' errors. An incomplete installation or uninstall, improper deletion of applications or hardware are some of them. It could also happen if your computer is recovered from a virus or malware (like adware/spyware) attack or by an improper shutdown of the computer.

All the above actions may result in the deletion/corruption of the entries in the Windows system files and, as such, the corrupted system's file will lead to the missing and wrongly linked information and files needed for the proper function of the application.

I hope this helps point you towards the right direction and please keep me posted on your progress!

Hey @mgerla - how are you today?

First off, thanks for sharing your walk-around this issue - much appreciated. As you pointed out, one way to resolve this is using our offline installer on Safe Mode.

Jumping in on this one here and wanted to let you know that I did a small research and found that this error is initiated by Windows - not Dropbox. Excuse my lengthy response in advance and please read on for more information specific to this error.

The error you get "80004002" means your Windows Update is having issues. This problem can occur in many Microsoft operating systems including your Windows 7 Professional setup while most common causes include:

1. Errors in registry files

2. Missing system files that have accidentally been associated with other programs and deleted

3. Viruses or malware that cause corruption in program or system files

4. Installations that have failed to complete fully.

In some cases, the error code 0x80004002 arises when drivers are out of date. Should this be the case, you can check on the status of your drivers by going into the settings for your operating system and selecting the “Update Drivers” option. You should also check your system for any necessary updates to your Windows software. After you have checked and installed any necessary drivers, make sure to restart your computer to fully apply any changes that the installation process has introduced.

Another thing I would in this case is use the registry cleaning program included in the Windows software package as this tool might discover if there are files that are corrupted and need to be repaired. Most of the times, this same tool will be able to repair the files and resolve the error.

Give our installer from this page a go after these suggestions and let me know if you still get this specific error!

Once you have download the install file, double-click on the file to run the installer. Please do NOT launch the installer by right-clicking on the file and selecting "Run as admin" as this will lead to incorrect install permissions.

In closing and to reiterate my previous points here are some general suggestions for anyone getting the Windows generated error "0x80004002":

  1. Run your computer’s registry cleaner to discover which files need to be repaired, fix them and restart your computer
  2. Update drives and and software
  3. Re-install your Windows software
  4. Run your virus scan software
  5. Use an automated tool.

I hope this information is helpful and please let us know how this goes. Cheers!

[I've also moved your post under a new thread since the error you are getting is a different one. You can always refer to the orginal post here.]

I don't think it's a Microsoft Problem. In the German Community other Users have the same problem. I can't believe that all of these Users have problems with Windows Update.

I have a Fixit-Tool for Problems with Microsoft Windows-Update. Find nothing. I removed Dropbox completly from my Notebook and installed it again. For the moment everything is ok. I installed Dropbox with an older Version. After Installation Dropbox runs the Update to the newest Version.

Will see if it works for the next Update.

Hi there, I am receiving the same exact message as well.

I'm afraid to uninstall as I need Dropbox syncing capabilities. If I cannot reinstall that is a major problem. I'm trying to use the offline installer for 58.4.92 on windows 10

Sorry to hear that @Section8 - did you have the chance to go through my previous suggestions in this very same post?

As I aforementioned, this error comes from Windows - not Dropbox. Your best bet in such cases would be to search for this specific error thread in the web to get more information about it or contact Microsoft directly.

In any case, keep me posted on your findings please.

Hi Walter, I stopped short at reinstalling windows because frankly that's not really a viable solution for me at the moment and I know is simply a catch-all solution. I'll have a play around with some error threads and see how I go. If I manage to fix it, I'll post here again and let you know. Thanks!
