The referral I sent to my friend has been marked as ineligible.

Hi everyone,

I'm still encountering an issue with a Dropbox friend referral where I'm trying to earn the 500MB bonus storage. I sent the invitation back in 2016. The referral was marked as "ineligible," and I initially considered it might be due to shared computer access, but I can now confirm that the friend I invited did not install or log in to Dropbox on the same computer I used to send the invitation.

Given this new information, I'm trying to understand why the referral might still be ineligible.

Here are my updated questions:

1. Could the age of the invitation (sent in 2016) be a factor in the referral's ineligibility now? Are there expiration dates or limitations on older referral links?
2. What are the specific steps a referred friend needs to take to ensure the referral is successful and I receive the 500MB bonus under the current program?
3. If the issue isn't related to a shared computer, what are some other common reasons for referral ineligibility that I should consider?
4. Is it possible that the referral program terms or the bonus amount offered in 2016 were different and are no longer valid?
5. Should I try sending a new referral invitation to the same friend now? Would that have a better chance of being successful under the current program?

Any insights into how the referral program has evolved since 2016 or common pitfalls to avoid would be greatly appreciated. As a Basic user, direct email support options seem limited, so I'm hoping the community can offer some guidance.

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Thanks for your post, KimSB.

To clarify, is your friend trying again to accept the same referral you sent them back in 2016? What if you send them a new one? Is the referral still being marked as ineligible?

Other than that, the reasons why referrals are usually rendered ineligible in our system are the ones mentioned in this Help Center article

Finally, you mentioned in the beginning of your post that your friend isn't using the same device as you; are they connected to the same IP address as you perhaps?

Let me know more info, and we’ll go from there.

Thank you for your prompt response.

Unfortunately, when I attempted to send a new referral link via the referral page, the button was inactive and unclickable, preventing me from generating a new link.

I had no choice but to have my invitee find and accept the referral link I originally sent in 2016.

Regarding your question about IP addresses, while we work at the same company and may share the same external IP address due to our company's network configuration, we use different computers. Consequently, our internal IP addresses and MAC addresses are distinct.

Could you please advise on how to proceed so that both my invitee and I can receive the referral bonus?

    Thank you for your assistance.

Can we actually send you an email, so we can take a closer look?

When dialogue goes into direct email mode, it would still be helpful if the community could learn the general outcome...

Hey GregP1, you're absolutely right about this one!

When it comes to referrals, we usually switch to email in order to have some account-visibility and check the referral's status on our end.

We can then proceed accordingly and either add the referral space to the account on behalf of the user, or inform them as to why they're seeing this status, and how they can proceed in order to fix it.

If you're facing a similar situation let me know and I'll be more than happy to help. 🙃
