Renaming Dropbox root folder

Renaming Dropbox root folder

PaulFurness

I have just spent over an hour reading post after post in the DB community, with many, many users asking for the feature of renaming the Dropbox root folder on their local machine.

EVERYONE that posted hates having spaces and brackets in the folder name. Plenty of poeple want to make the path very short (eg "c:\DB") and the "official workaround" of using links doesn't work as expected on OSX often, and there is no support for it anyway.

WHY CAN'T WE DO THIS?! Core architecture issues are not trivial, but people have been asking - no, DEMANDING this feature for 5 YEARS!!!

It's not THAT hard to do. It's fine to have a default name for the folder that dropbox uses when it first runs, but for goodness sakes, why not add a simple custom option to the desktop client - hide it behind some kind of "advanced settings" button if you must - that let's me simply TELL dropbox what to call the folder. Would the code seriously not be able to cope with reading that value as a variable from a config file rather than generating it on the fly?

Someone from dropbox devs: Tell us why it's so hard. We're paying for this stuff after all - in my case, my company has over 70 Dropbox business accounts, so this isn't just one guy in his bedroom asking this!

We’ve been asking for this for years. Seems like it’s always been status “not for right now”. @Walter I haven’t been updating the thread but this is still an important feature request for me. It is certainly not dropbox’s fault that some other softwares cannot play nice with your weird file paths, but you could give us the tools to deal with it ourselves with custom path names. To reiterate my issue symlinks as a work around don’t work for every use case. My opinion is you should move this back into consideration for a feature or share with us users in this thread your solution if there is one I’m not aware of.

Your company has screwed up HUNDREDS of links by renaming my folder to Dropbox (Personal) without warning or any other option. I had to join a team for work and now all my original documents containing links to videos within projects will have to be manually relinked. I am beyond livid and disgusted with your company right now.

And of course Dropbox's solution is no solution. They are too arrogant and dismissive to bother with any workaround other than make me disconnect the accounts which means I would have to log in and out manually for every single transactions between my working and team accounts. Beyond how sloppy and ridiculous it was for any mildly intelligent coder to decide to use parenthesis (of all things, really?) for renaming the original Dropbox folder, they have been sitting on this terrible code for years now despite the many many MANY complaints and people like myself who now have to manually relink hundreds if not thousands of video files and embeds inside of existing projects. I used to love Dropbox and implored all of my clients to use it, now I will seek alternatives, because Dropbox is apparently unconcerned with losing my account as well as my main client's account. Your hubris will be your undoing, Dropbox.

P.S. Thanks to other ex users for the suggestion to use OneDrive!
