The Dropbox Badge is great - but couldn't you just make it a native Microsoft Office Plugin?

Explorer | Level 4

I love the functionality of the new Dropbox badge. While Dropbox is an important part of my file workflow, it is not that important that it deserves it's own badge. Microsoft Office has a great Plugin system - I already have the Adobe PDF Plugin and that is deeply integrated with the software. Dropbox could also just have it's own ribbon, or have all it's functionality integrated in the File menu.

That would make it way more slick, and - in my opinion - usable. From a marketing standpoint, I understand that you want to push the Badge functionality. Maybe you could make the native plugin a Pro feature, that would also be good for me.

Hi Matthias,

Thanks for your feedback. We'll be happy to pass that along to the development team!

@Matthias C. I disagree, plugins are great BUT they are limited to MSOffice, my understanding is the Badge integration with Office is its first step, following this it will begin to offer integration options as they become available for other applications, any application capable of reporting what files it has (as office can) will be able to be touched for this data, and badge functionality applied to it also.
Why limit yourself to one developers platform.

@Saoirse : gotta love the macro answers!

@Dave C. my point was more that the integration should be native, whenever an application (such as Office) offers that. I know it's much more work to do deep plugin integration, rather than just having an overlay - but I think it would make work much easier (and take away the edge OneDrive currently has over Dropbox regarding integration). When an application does not have that kind of plugin system, the badge definitely is a great idea.

@Matthias C. and I disagree, native integration means they would have to perform it with a pile of integration apps for each application offering a api or app integration point,e ach of the applications will supply different abilities etc etc, what a nightmare.
Also MSOffice apps can be fooled as easy as pie by other MSOffice apps, I dont trust anything mine say as I can trick everyone elses.

Hello,

The new badge feature which hovers over MS word should be added as a tab in the program. I find the badge a little but intrusive. Also, if this is to be used for other programs too, there should also be a little more integration into the interface.

Thanks

So like you want it as a tab in office but you also want it in other programs, Rollseyes.

The attitude doesn't make any sense, like.

I said that "if this is to be used for other programs." It may already be, like, implemented there and I just haven't noticed. I just feel a tab in Office and a tool bar icon Adobe Acrobat is a little more friendly to the interface. I'm, like, giving a reason as to why I've switched this feature off and, like, a solution which I feel might help me and perhaps other users to turn it back on.

I personally couldn't care less about the feature, I just figured somebody had worked on it and felt that it was important enough to implement, so, like, what's the use in wasting time if people don't like it? Maybe I'm not the only one who feels this way and Dropbox would like to know. I thought I'd take a minute from my day to pass on what is called a "constructive comment." You should learn about them one day. Sigh.

+1 on this. I already  posted the idea a few days ago, let's see if the development team will make the effort and make the integration an actually usable feature.

Hey Ryan,

This is a really good idea. We're experimenting with different ways to surface our features in Word, and the badge you're seeing today is the v1, but it's possible it will go in a different direction in the future.

Thanks for sharing your honest feedback and please continue to do so. Our dev team monitors the forum for feedback and we note down these requests from all our users-- we'll keep it in mind going forward! Thanks.
