Solved

After uninstalling and reinstalling the Dropbox desktop app, I'm unable to open my files

I uninstalled and re-installed dropbox in my laptop. Though all my earlier files and folders are seen, I am unable to open any of these (excel, word, notepad, pdf). I get a warning saying " file format or file extension is not valid" .  If it is one or two file, I can try to repair, but I stored many files in dropbox. Can someone help me resolve the issue.

Thanks,

  • I am not techsavy. I know basics like word, excel, etc. I just type my personal data and store them in dropbox. I was clueless yesterday when things went wrong. To my surprise this morning when I took a chance to open an excel file that I stored in dropbox,  it worked. Then I tried to open word, note pad and pdf. They all worked. I thank the team for spontaneously coming to my  rescue.

How the problem crept in and how it got resolved are mystery to me.  One thing that I now notice is all file folder icons, individual file icons and dropbox icon look a bit different than what it was earlier.

    Thanks again.

Hey janardhanan  - sorry to hear you're having issues with this.

Can you please send us a screenshot of the exact error you're getting so that we can have a visual too?

If you could also clarify your computer's OS version, and the version/status of the Dropbox desktop app as shown in your system tray/menu bar, I'd appreciate it.

Hey janardhanan , I moved your conversation to a thread of its own, since your issue is not related to the issue on the thread you posted in originally.

Is the Dropbox app running on your computer at the moment? I'm not seeing the small Dropbox icon in your system tray by the clock in your screenshot.

Can you click on the arrow with the hidden icons, to see if the Dropbox icon is there?

If it is, please hover over it with your mouse and let us know what you see there.
