Large file downloads are incomplete from a Dropbox shared link
Hello,
I am experiencing an issue when downloading a large .MOV file (13.7 GB) from a link a friend shared with me. The file is stored in their Dropbox and has fully uploaded on their side. When I use the shared link, I see the preview page and click the “Download” button. The file downloads, but it is always incomplete, anywhere from 5 GB to 11 GB instead of the full 13.7 GB. The resulting file is corrupted and cannot be opened.
- Troubleshooting I have tried:
- Tested on three different laptops (two Windows, one macOS/Safari)
- Tried multiple browsers (Chrome, Edge, Safari)
- Used incognito/private browsing mode
- Tried two completely separate internet connections (WIFI)
- I have enough of free space on my PC
In every case, the download finishes prematurely and the file size varies between attempts. This only happens with Dropbox, I can download similarly large files from other services without issue.
I also noticed that when accessing the link, panels pop up prompting me to log in or upgrade from the free plan. I cannot help but wonder if these interruptions are contributing to the incomplete downloads or if this is an intentional limitation to encourage subscription.
Could you please explain why the download is truncated and provide a working method for downloading the full file from the link? Is there a limitation with downloading large files from the web interface, even when using the Download button?
Thank you for your assistance, Daniel

As to whats going wrong I cannot offer any suggestions, sorry.
However, as a workaround you could ask the person to use Transfers instead: https://help.dropbox.com/share/create-dropbox-transfer

Hi Borrtex, thanks for messaging the Community.
Does anyone else have any issues when attempting to download the file in the shared link?
Have you tried what Mark said regarding having that user create a Dropbox Transfer link to send the file to you?
Keep me updated with any progress!
