Dropbox search is broken and it doesn't show the correct results.
I have uploaded a folder directly of files, where (public domain) books are organized in folders by author, and then as files for each book.
I had evidence that a certain quote existed in the folder directory for a certain author. Emphases added for point of discussion later:
The gulf which has long yawned between employers and employed is widening; and the distance between the avenues and the tenement houses is constantly becoming greater."
š When I search for āavenuesā, I first find the right book (file), and then within the file I find the specific paragraph.
š” When I search for ātenementā, Dropbox tells me there is no such text in the directory. (I have since downloaded this plain text file, and Microsoft Word can find it easily). This has happened a couple of times, where I have evidence a quote exists, and I search using the Dropbox system, and it doesnāt find it. My very vague impression is that this is a new behavior?
š” When I search for āemployerā, Dropbox gives me all sorts of files, specifically highlighting in several of the cases that it has found āemploymentā. This is completely unacceptable, and if you are doing soft searches, it only wastes your CPU cycles.
I have screen-grab proof of all of the above, if it helps to see.

It seems like DropBox is 100% a useless service. Going back over 5 years, DropBox staff seems to repeat "OuR engineers are looking into it :-D" which seems transparently like a lie. Either that or they have the MOST INCOMPETENT DEVELOPMENT TEAM I've ever encountered with a modern service. I came here today after frustrations with GoogleDrive (which still exist), but at least GoogleDrive allows you to search file names. Good God.
Here are bullet point suggestions, since DropBox seems to be pretty incompetent and I'm not sure they have great reading comprehension/critical thinking skills:
- BASIC FUNCTIONALITY IS BROKEN
- YOUR STAFF RESPONSES MAKE THE SITUATION WORSE BY PRETENDING THERE'S A FIX.
- YOU ARE AN EMBARRASSMENT OF A COMPANY.
- DO BETTER OR BE NOTHING.

I realise I could be really clutching at straws here, but, are you a paid user as that impacts search ability?
In regards to the above I'd suggest logging a ticket with support via http://www.dropbox.com/support and adding the links to the files AND the screenshots as well so Dropbox see it.

Iāve been a Dropbox customer for years. Love it. Use it every day.
Since their stupid āimprovementā to allow web only files (something I will never do as I want my own hard drive copy as well), I can no longer search reliably.
Iām a librarian. I use search 50 times a day. Dropbox is now useless.
Iām looking for a different cloud product to switch to. - SirRoke15 days agoExplorer | Level 3
After complaining, I took your advice to submit a support request.
That failed too! Got message saying to try again later. WTF is gappening? Dropbox went from a premier service to junk in one week. Time to switch services. Vote with our money. - Megan12 days ago

Hey SirRoke, thanks for posting here, and let me jump in to help!
When did you first notice this behavior? Also, do you happen to have any screenshots in order for me to have a visual?
Keep in mind that Support isn't available during the weekends, that's why you might be having trouble reaching them. If you have a paid plan, you might want to try again now.
Keep me posted, and we'll take it from there!

Sorry to see that you're having issues submitting a help request to our support team, SirRoke.
Can you use a different browser to see if that helps, please?

I tried Safari on my iPad Pro previously and it let me get to the Support page, but just balked at taking my comments when I tried to submit it.
So, doing as you suggested, I used Chrome just now to try and get to the Dropbox Support page and got the attached screenshot. I donāt use the other two browsers. I am using the current most up to date versions of Safari and Chrome on my iPad.
āSo much for helpful support. - Nancy12 days ago

Hey SirRoke. Iād like to ask a few more details on the issue youāre having while using file search. We can then log a ticket for you instead, if necessary.
If you donāt mind, can you post a screenshot of what you see on your end here, so that I can take a look?
Also, as Mark mentioned above, do you happen to be on a paid Dropbox subscription? Iād like to check whether youāre using full-text search or not.

Yes, I have a paid subscription. It keeps saying Searching and never finds or stops.
Whereas the next search works fine. Same words that donāt work always donāt work.
