Has Dropbox changed how version history works?
Has Dropbox changed how version history works recently?
It used to be the case that if
- last saved a file one year ago
- opened it and saved a few versions today
- then realized I'd actually wanted to start a new file (and not overwrite the one-year-old file with what I was working on today)
- then I could roll back to the version of the file from one year ago
But today when that happened to me, the only versions that I could see of the file were the several versions that I'd saved today. I did not see the last version from ~1 year ago.
Thanks

They changed how it works, but it wasn't recently. It was years ago.
Previously it worked just as you described. You could roll back any change made in the last 30 days, If you edited a file that was last saved a year ago, you could roll it back to the year-old version as long as you did it within 30 days of making the change.
Now, however, you can only roll back to a version that was saved in the last 30 days (or 180/365 days, depending on your plan). If you save a file today, then make a change to it in 30 days, you can revert to the original file. But if you make that change at 31 days, you can no longer revert back to the original file.
Dropbox made this change several years ago, and when Mark and I called them out on it, they claimed it had always worked this way. The documentation was updated to reflect how it works now and that was it.
