I can't find my files in my account although I can access them from a shared link

I work for an organization that uses Dropbox as a place for affiliates to access documents like our manual.  We update it every year in late summer. I logged in and there is nothing in the folder.  I can still see everything through the link externally, but it is no longer linked to my account so I cannot update anything.

I am certain that I am using the correct email address.  We also have a plug in to Dropbox on our website and the form attachments automatically get saved in this account.  I confirmed that the account linked is the one I am trying to access - there is nothing in the account's Dropbox at all.  Completely empty.  Please help!

I tried using chatbot to no avail.  Here is its review of the situation.

User cannot access their files when logged into Dropbox, although the files are still accessible through external links. The files were last seen in fall and are not in shared folders, deleted files, or findable through search. Standard troubleshooting steps like checking version history, searching, and accessing from different browsers have not resolved the issue.

  • Ok - I figured it out.  Thank you for everyone's help.  One of my colleagues had changed the login email...  🤭

When was the last time you signed in to the account? Has it been more than 12 months? What does your Events page show? Is there any activity shown, or is it empty?

You are almost certainly logging in to the wrong account then.

If the link is active the files exist somewhere or the link would fail. Check what account you are logged in to.

Hi ICPadmin, in addition to what Rich, Dell_Dropbox, and Mark have said, as you mentioned you work for an organization, are you part of a Dropbox team?

Is it possible that the link is on another account on that same Dropbox team? Does the link appear on the shared links page?

Please keep us posted with any further details!

Hi there ICPadmin and welcome to the Dropbox Community. I’m really glad to hear you’ve managed to sort this out and thanks so much for coming back to share your update. It’s always helpful when the community can learn from each other’s experiences.

Since you’ve been navigating shared links and file access, I’d love to know... how do you usually use Dropbox? Is it mostly for personal use, work, or something else entirely? Always curious to hear how people are using it day to day.

    Looking forward to hearing more,

    T😸 (Dropbox Community Manager)
