Increase of 200GB internal storage space and AirDrop transfers intermittent

Hello,

Since the most recent Dropbox update, I've noticed that roughly 200GB's worth of storage has miraculously become available on my MacBook's internal SSD. This space wasn't available prior to the Dropbox update. 200GB seemingly appearing out of nowhere is very concerning, but I can't seem to find what could have possibly been deleted - the trash is empty. Could it have been duplicate files being purged that I wasn't aware of?

Also, when AirDropping files from my iPhone, they don't always show up in the Downloads folder despite receiving the "Sent" and "Received" notifications in the Recent Notifications bar as well as seeing the Downloads folder icon bouncing in the dock.

Has anyone else experienced similar after updating to the latest version of Dropbox?

Hi idontknowhatimdoing, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Regarding the AirDrop issue, are you referring to this behavior?

Is it possible that some files have moved to an online-only status? Have you recently upgraded to the latest version of Mac OS, and the Dropbox desktop application?

This will help me to assist further!

    Hey Jay,

Yes, that is exactly the issue I’m experiencing with AirDrop.

In regards to the storage issue, I’m not entirely sure if certain files/directories have been set to online-only. I certainly don’t remember purposely enabling this feature when updating to the latest version of Dropbox.

I’m using the latest version of MacOS Ventura on an M1 Pro MacBook Pro and have the latest version of Dropbox Desktop installed.

It's likely that some files have moved to online-only status, or space was just freed up since the upgrade to the newer version of the Dropbox desktop application for Mac OS.

Is there a way to prevent files/folders being online-only? Doesn’t seem like a hugely helpful feature for my workflow
  • Update: I removed the Downloads folder from my Dropbox Backup and AirDrop is working again. Not ideal for obvious reasons, but at least the functionality is there again.

Hey idontknowhatimdoing, sorry for jumping in.

If you’d like to make your files available offline once more, you can directly right click on them, and there should be the relevant option to do so via the dropdown menu.

    Hi Nancy,

Yes, I can see that option. However, the chances of making this change to every online-only file is very slim. Is there a setting to make this change on a system level?

If you’d like all of your Dropbox files to be available offline, you can right click on the local Dropbox folder directly and select the relevant option.

The desktop app should then start downloading your files.
