Clicking on the Dropbox icon opens the local folder instead of the app menu (v228.3.5456).
On a brand new windows PC I installed the latest dropbox (v228.3.5456), and the dropbox GUI won't show. When I right click on the dropbox icon in the systray nothing shows, when I double click on the dropbox icon in the systray it just opens my dropbox folder. When I reinstall dropbox it works, but only for a few minutes. After that again there is no way of opening the GUI. I have to keep reinstalling dropbox to access the GUI. Anyone else encounter this or find a fix?

That is a beta version, it may be worth trying this one instead to see if that helps

oh thx for letting me know. I'll try this. Why was I pushed a beta version I wonder, I don't want beta software managing 2.5TB of my data!

You have to have opted in to it at some point. It isnt something that comes automatically.
You can opt in and out via https://help.dropbox.com/account-settings/enable-early-releases.
For info you can tell if its a beta as the build will be in format xxx.3.yyy where as a stable build is always xxx.4.yyy. - msakten10 days agoHelpful | Level 7
ok thx. I didn't opt in for early releases and sure enough my settings show that. I had downloaded dropbox from dropbox.com/download and that gave me the 228.3 version.

Hey msakten, did you manage to download the stable app version Mark linked above?
If yes, did that help?

Annoyingly, yesterday it did work, but just now I realized it doesn't work, and it's because it's updated itself back to 228.3!! Even though Early access is turned off as per the screenshot above!
I'm reinstalling the 227.4 version.

I installed 227.4 a few hours ago. It worked for a while. And now I noticed behind the scenes it secretly updated itself back to 228.3 again and I cannot open the dropbox GUI. This is very frustrating.

Can you send me a screenshot (omitting any personal info) of your account settings where the 'early releases' toggle is shown then msakten?

There is a screenshot in a few posts prior. Here is another screenshot I took just now.
