Dropbox beta version appears on WinGet

Just letting you know that there is a beta version of Dropbox on the winget (Windows programme updater) system.

>winget upgrade
Name Id Version Available Source
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dropbox Dropbox.Dropbox 221.4.5365 222.3.4916 winget

That's a bit confusing, and it would probably be better just to put release versions there.

I got bit. Now I see that I don't have files in dropbox! No previous version in winget to go back.

Hopefully you can install and re-install using the installer at https://www.dropboxforum.com/discussions/101003016/stable-build-221-4-5365/828833

Hey ataraxy, thanks for reaching out to us.

The Dropbox version that appears on your screenshot is the most recent stable, not the beta one.

You can see all the Dropbox versions on this page of our Community.

If I've misunderstood you in any way, though, please let me know!

    Hi Hannah!

I think that you're looking at the version number for the installed version (the number in the Version column), not the version number for the available update (the number in the Available column).

The version number in the Available column is 222.3.4916, which is clearly a beta version:  https://www.dropboxforum.com/discussions/101003016/beta-build-222-3-4916/828973 and therefore, I don't believe that it should be released through winget.

Sorry that it's not a live link to the beta, but I get an error when I try to insert the URL with the Insert Link tool.

Hey ataraxy, let me jump in here!

Please keep in mind that the packages on WinGet aren't being uploaded from our end.

In any case, I'll forward your feedback to the appropriate areas so we can continue to improve.

If you need something else, please let me know and I will be more than happy to help every step of the way.

This is still happening.  As of today, winget is serving up the 2-day old Beta Build 225.3.4851.

Hey CaptZack, thanks for the nudge here.

As we mentioned above, we're not in charge of the assets on WinGet and that's run entirely by their community.

So, in this case, I'd advise that you report this with WinGet for further info.

    Hi Megan!

Just getting in touch because this is still happening.

I'm pretty sure that the packages are being uploaded by Dropbox.  Here's the information on the submission process:  https://learn.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/package-manager/package/

And if they're not being uploaded by Dropbox, shouldn't Dropbox be concerned about that?  If Dropbox isn't doing it, then it's taking the risk that something dodgy is submitted.

Hopefully you can find the people who are submitting it, one way or another.

Hi ataraxy, thanks for your reply.

We can confirm that it isn't a member of Dropbox who is uploading the files to Winget, and that said user can be found here.

It wouldn't be possible for us to moderate or control what files are uploaded to a third party site.

However, we do appreciate the feedback on this matter and we take all comments into consideration when improving the Dropbox services.
