Dropbox in Linux 32 bit unable to download the proprietary daemon
I have an old 32 bits computer in which I installed Linux LMDE 6 (the latest 32 bit version of Linux Mint).
The OS comes with a 32 bit version of Dropbox version 2020.03.04 that can be installed through the software center or through:
$ sudo apt install dropbox
When running the application with:
$ dropbox start
I get the message:
Starting Dropbox...
The Dropbox daemon is not installed!
Run "dropbox start -i" to install the daemon
Then I run:
$ dropbox start -i
and a window opens with the message:
"In order to use Dropbox, you must download the proprietary daemon", and I click in 'OK'
But then it fails to download the proprietary daemon, giving the message:
"Trouble connecting to Dropbox servers. Maybe your internet connection is down, or you need to set your http_proxy environment variable."
Then I downloaded the latest Debian 32 bit package I found in https://linux.dropboxstatic.com/packages/debian/dropbox_2024.04.17_i386.deb, installed it, but the problem to download the daemon still persists.
Finally, following some tips in the internet, I tried to download the daemon manually, using the command:
$ wget -O - "https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86"
and I get an ERROR 404: Not found.
I concluded from this that the 32 bit daemon is not longer available at the Dropbox repository.
Is it possible to obtain a 32 bit daemon anywhere else?
Are we cursed to not use Dropbox in 32 bit Linux anymore?
If the 32 bit daemon is no longer available, why 32 bit Debian packages are still maintained?

Thanks for joining our Community, fvroig.
Would you mind checking the system requirements for using the Dropbox app on Linux OS?
Do you see that you are meeting these requirements on your machine?
Keep me posted.

Hey Hannah
I am stuck with exactly the same problem.
I run Debian Linux in a 32 bit version and I want to install the headless client but end up with error 404.
I use the following link: https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86
Thanks for your support.

Hi Hannah
Thanks for the tip. Actaully, I am not sure if I meet the requirements or not. I expected that you could tell me if Dropbox can or cannot run in 32 bit Linux.

Hey Flo42 - I just wanted to mention that the Dropbox desktop app is available in 64-bit for Linux users as outlined here.
I hope this clarifies.

I had this same problem running a 32 bit version of Q4OS to resurrect and old Fujitsu Lifebook. I downloaded and installed the newest .deb package and installed it. I kept getting the same error you report above:
"Trouble connecting to Dropbox servers. Maybe your internet connection is down, or you need to set your http_proxy environment variable."
Eventually I found the latest 32 version of the Dropbox daemon. The link is below. Download and extract it. Move the .dropbox-dist folder from your Downloads folder to your Home folder. Run Dropbox from the GUI or from the CLI (dropbox start). Everything should work fine.
