How to backup files to Dropbox but ONLY new files that I will create on my new laptop?

Good day

I bought a new Acer laptop and received 100 GB free Dropbox storage. I have copied all my files and folders over to my new laptop. I don't want to backup these files to Dropbox but ONLY new files that I will create on my new laptop. How do I do that?

Also, how do I let a file automatically save to Dropbox while busy working on the file, e.g. a Word doc?

Hey jsteyn, welcome to our Community!

When you say that you copied your files, and folders over to your new laptop, do you mean your Dropbox content or simply content from your old device?

Do you use our desktop app at the moment?

When you use our desktop app, that will create a Dropbox folder locally on the device, with your account's content there.

If you wish to add new content to your account, all you have to do is copy content there, or drag and drop it. You choose which files will be there.

Also, if you're working on a Word file, the app will automatically sync the changes you make there, and sync them once it's saved.

    Keep us posted!

Thanks Megan for the quick reply.

It was all my "old" content which I saved on external hard drive.

If I go to https://www.dropbox.com/backup I see my folders which I copied over from the EHD (screenshot below). Do I understand correctly:

    1. I can choose to backup these folders by selecting them and clicking "save"?

    2. However, if I don't do that then any new files that I create and save within such folder/s will not automatically backup?

    3. If I want newly created files to backup automatically, I must save them in another folder and then do number 1?

Hey jsteyn, you can set-up your Backup using these steps.

If you don't enable the feature, and you simply make changes inside your external hard drive, those won't sync to Dropbox, unless you choose to copy the content from the drive, to your Dropbox folder locally.

It's not entirely clear to me if you had external drive Backup enabled on the old or new device. Would you mind clarifying?

Also, when you're referring to backing up only "new files", can you let me know if these files are inside your external drive, or device?
