The Microsoft desktop app was moved to WindowsApps Folder, and icons have changed

I installed the Dropbox app from the Windows App Store. Everything seems fine with syncing, but after about a day, the icons for the desktop shortcut and the folder in file explorer change to the default white paper icon.

I have had this happen on two different Windows 11 machines. One is personal, one is at work. File syncing still works just fine.

Poking around a bit, I found out that the desktop shortcut can't find the EXE for the icons. The whole Dropbox installation folder was moved to the hidden folder "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps" and the default permissions of that folder do not allow users to access it. Additionally, the Dropbox icon on the desktop can't access it for its own icons!

How does happen and how can it get fixed?

Hi theIdeaMen, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Could you try uninstalling the Dropbox desktop application, and then reinstall it via the Windows app store, to see if this helps?

Keep me updated with any progress!

I have tried this, but it only temporarily fixes the issue. It will revert back to this default icon again after an unknown time (I haven't timed it).

Are you using a personal machine, or a company-managed device?

Are you able to instead install the Dropbox desktop application from the Dropbox site?

One of the machines this happens to is company-managed, but the other one is my personal machine. I will try the Dropbox site installer on my personal one and report back.

Been running Dropbox app from the link you provided for a few days and it has been fine. Must just be the app from the Microsoft store that does the odd behavior.
