Unexpected external hard-drive connection loss triggers mass data deletion

We've been working with an external hard drive workflow for many years now. A while back we changed to portable SSD hard drives that are a bit smaller, but a bit more efficient energy-wise. A couple years back I had an issue with a large hard drive that lost the connection to my computer that triggered a mass data deletion of all our files. It was no problem to recover that data. Only issue was that every one of our team members was nearly lame to work since a major sync had to occur until everything was up and running again. The new SSDs seem to be a bit buggy in keeping the connection to the our MacBook Pro for a consistent amount of time. Sometimes you get a warning that the hard drive was ejected, but without the hard- drive being lost, and without a mass sync event started. Other times it loses the connection and all hell breaks loose. If we catch it right when it happens, it's not so bad. But if we catch it later, we're dealing with 100,000 of files that need to be synced anew. Majorly time consuming. Not to mention the bulk of data that gets up- and downloaded. Is anyone else having these problems?

Thanks for any tips! Sigrid

This is the main reason why it's suggested that you not store your Dropbox folder on an external drive. If it becomes disconnected while Dropbox is running, or if Dropbox is started before the drive is connected, Dropbox can see the missing drive as a mass deletion which it will sync to your account.

There is no option to prevent this.
