Can I move the Dropbox folder to an external drive on my macOS computer?

I have my dropbox folder on my Mac but It's too small so I want to transfer it on an external HD SSD to have all my files available both in and off line: How can I do that without losing any file and free asom space on the SSD of the Mac?
Thanks.

If you're running the latest update of the Dropbox application on your Mac then you likely won't have the option to move the Dropbox folder to an external drive. The latest Dropbox update for macOS complies with Apple's FileProvider API which requires the Dropbox folder to be stored on the local drive under CloudStorage, and doesn't allow it to be moved to external storage.

This is a sneaky way for Apple to require you to buy a larger hard drive when you upgrade your machine no longer can you buy their base iMac with 512 gigs of memory and using an external drive you'll have to buy a Mac Pro or an upgraded hard drive which they charge upwards of $1200 for something that you can get for 300 from Amazon.
