Is my inaccessible account still active?

So, I recently contemplated getting Dropbox and decided to register. When doing so, I accidentally entered my old email (that has been inactive for quite some time). To my surprise there seems to be an active account linked to it, an account that I can’t access since it sends the 6-digit verification code to my email.

I know I had a Dropbox account some 5-7 (or even more so) years ago, but I was under the impression that inactive accounts gets deleted on a 12 month basis?

I know for certain that it’s been more than 5 years since I used it, so the account shouldn’t have been active for a long time. The fact that it’s still active is a bit unsettling, since it might indicate that someone else have gained access to the account.

I’ve tried contacting support, but to no avail. It doesn’t even look like my support request gets registered (do not receive a ticket to my new email).

I realize that I might not be able to gain access to my old account again, since it’s hard to verify me as the original owner.

But is there any way to initiate an account deletion if I provide information such as last password and more? Is there another way to contact support other than the forms (that doesn’t seem to work)?

Any help in resolving this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi RM26,

Thanks for getting in touch on the Community!

It's true that in most cases, accounts that have been inactive for longer than 12 months at a time can become disabled automatically, however, there could be an innocent reason why the account has yet to do so. Let's find out!

Do you have any Dropbox mobile apps still signed into it, or computer apps set to use it?

Did I get it right that you tried to use the form at the following address: https://www.dropbox.com/support/sign-in-issues ?

If signed into your new account, that won't work — right click the link and choose open in Incognito, or Private mode, so you can be sure you aren't signed in, and select "two-factor authentication" in the drop-down menu.

Let me know the ticket number after you do that, and be sure to check in your spam/junk mail folder, too.

    Keep me posted!
