Missing files from folders that show up as empty

I have a lot of folders that are showing empty but haven't deleted any.. why might this be?

    Hey H Wilson - sorry to hear about your missing files.

    Can you have a look at your events page and see if you can find and restore them from there?

    This is the place where all uploads, edits, and deletions are normally logged so it should help.

    Let me know of any updates!

    yes, that page is full up with all the recent activity , but the missing data is older, and there are heaps of folder (named) that are empty, its weird and worrying...
