Why did my quota limit increase?
I have a basic account. I installed the dropbox app on my android phone and my maximum storage capacity increased from 2gb to 2.25 gb.
Why did this happen?
Possibly due to a referral?

Yes it was due to my installing the app. What other methods, besides referral, increase storage capacity?

Officially only referrals now, you must have quite an old account as installing apps has been depreciated now.
There are also some things like buying certain machines which give temp bonuses but that's it really now.
